Top Ten Things I like/dislike in Romance Books
Top Ten Tuesday is an original feature/weekly meme created at The Broke and the Bookish. This feature was created because they are particularly fond of lists over there at The Broke and the Bookish. I'd love to share my lists with other bookish folks and would LOVE to see your top ten lists!
This week's topic is about things you like and dislike in a romantic story. I am a hopeless romantic and a big part of the books I read are romance so I loved the idea.
I like:
When two best friends fall in love: they know everything about each other, they accept their flaws and then realise there is no one is the world more perfect for them than each other. It gets me every time.
When two people fall in love slowly: I don't like things rushed. I enjoy reading about stolen glances, first kisses and all the growing tension.
Fun dates: there's nothing wrong with a nice romantic dinner but I love reading about original dates with a lot of fun. A treasure hunt, a magician show or a concert are always great.
Grand gestures: as I said, I am a hopeless romantic and when someone travels half the world to tell you they love you or hires the whole Disneyland for you it means Love with capital letter for me.
Banter: I am not a big fan of the hate to love relationships but I do enjoy a bit of banter. It's always fun to read
I dislike:
Cheating: for me cheating is a no go. If you cheat you lose all the trust your partner had in you.
Jerks as heros: lately I have read some books where the guy is just an asshole the whole story. He seems nice for a minute and then goes back to not caring at all. I do not like this.
Too hot and cold: sometimes I feel like the story is ONLY about a couple who fights and makes up a hundred times. As I said a bit of banter is fun, too hot and cold not.
Instalove: I think two people can have instant chemistry or instant attraction. But not instant love. You cannot tell someone you are completely and utterly in love with them after three seconds of meeting them because you don't know them.
Only one kiss: in some stories you know from the first page that those two should be together but they are completely unaware of this fact so they spend the whole book dating other people. And then, in the last page they realise they are meant to be together and the book ends with them kissing. Sorry but I need more than a kiss. I need an epilogue telling me that after 6 months, a year or a hundred they are still together and happy. Give more than one kiss!
So here are the things I like and dislike about romance. Do you share some of them with me?

Totally agree on the banter! I never think about fun dates, but it's so true! If their romance is exciting, their dates usually are more than the boring ones we're used to!
ReplyDeleteI know, right? Sometimes I think, not the Italian restaurant again! hehe
