With only a few days left of the year, it's time to look back and see which books have stood out. I've read 80 books this year so it took me a while to decided the ten best ones. The stories are all very different and unique (from different genres too) but somehow, they have all managed to stay with me during this eventful year. Here's my selection, in no particular order:

What a well crafted and magical story this is. It left me completely in awe, as it's like nothing I had read before. Rowan Coleman makes you believe that the impossible is possible and takes you in a journey like no other.

Since discovering Alice Peterson a few years ago, I've fallen in love with every single book she has written. Her stories always make me cry but somehow, she always manages to make feel better about life. And A Song for Tomorrow is no different in this sense, an unforgettable heart-breaking and uplifting story, but it's also so much more. I'd might even say that A Song for Tomorrow is Alice Peterson at her best.

Isabelle Broom is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This is a truly special and magical story, with a stunning setting, really interesting characters and lots of surprises in store for them and us.

Coming Home to the Comfort Food Café by Debbie Johnson

There's nothing I didn't love in this story. Although this is the third book in the Comfort Food Café series, it can be read as a stand-alone. Catching up with the old characters was a treat but getting to know the new characters was even better. I hadn't read a story that had left me with such a great feeling of joy and a such a warm heart in a long while. I think this is Debbie Johnson's best yet.

Review: Let me start by saying Turtles All the Way Down is a brilliant book. Given that John Green is a really famous writer and that his last book was a smashing success, expectations for this one were really high, to say the least. So I went into it with quite an open mind but I instantly realised we were in for a very special ride. 

In this story, we get to meet Aza, her mum and her circle of friends, especially her best friend, Daisy. Aza is a highly interesting character. She suffers OCD and as you read about her and her ever-tightening spiral of thoughts, you really understand what she is going through and how it is affecting her life. I really think that John Green paints a really clear picture of what suffering a mental illness feels like (for the person suffering and for the people around them), which I am sure will open many eyes. 

Once again, teenagers in this story are very mature and really intelligent, discussing complex concepts and wondering about the universe and the meaning of life. I've read already a few reviews that say that this makes them less real or relatable but for me it's quite the contrary. I enjoyed immensely reading about them and learning about their struggles, their fascinations and dreams and I think many young readers will relate easily with these characters. 

On first sight, the plot for this story is not really complex, two girls trying to gather clues about a famous disappearance. But everything that happens around it, the characters, their conversations, their interactions, their struggles, their inner worlds... is what makes this book so special.

For me, this book is a winner and a must-read. It's definitely different from John Green's previous books but so so good. I am sure this book will touch many readers.

Review: Isabelle Broom is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors. Her stories are getting better and better with each new book and she always takes us readers to the most wonderful places. This time we head to Lake Como to discover a magical setting and two heartfelt, compelling and really interesting stories.

On one hand we have brave and stubborn Taggie, who has left London and moved to Como to try to heal her broken heart. On the other hand, we have Lucy who is quite at the beginning of a relationship. She has surprised her boyfriend with a trip to Como to share her love for this lake with her special person. 

I was really curious about both story lines and it was really difficult (quite impossible, actually) to put this book down. Both stories were full of secrets and quite unexpected surprises and I just wanted to know everything that was going on. This was such a clever and touching book. I completely fell in love with it.

Once again, Isabelle Brooms brings us a magical and evocative story that really tugs at your heartstrings. And its characters will stay with me for a long time. I actually finished this book a few days ago and I haven't stopped missing them. It's safe to say that The Place We Met will be on my top reads of the year.

Definitely one not to miss these holidays, pick a copy and get lost in gorgeous lake Como.

Review: let me start with... wow! This is one of the best psychological thriller I've read this year. When I first started reading this story I was pretty sure there would be a big romance with some tension... I was NOT prepared for what really happened. What a clever, well written, compelling and addictive story. 

The build-up tension during the whole story is just perfect, you really don't know what is going on until you are in the middle of the action, holding your breath, completely absorbed in the story, devouring page after page until the early hours of the morning. It had been a really long time since a book had put me in such a stressful state. 

Also, how original and unique is the idea behind this novel? It's set in the near future, when NASA has sent a spaceship into the deep space to reach a viable planet for humanity to develop. Romy happens to be only survivor left in that spaceship and, somehow, it's really easy to relate to her, even if she has never been in the Earth. I loved getting to know her and I surprised myself at how much I cared about her. Definitely a very well developed character.

I highly recommend this book to readers who enjoy a good thriller. Believe me, this story will surprise you, will shock you and will completely capture you!

Review: last year I had the pleasure of reading Summer at the Comfort Food Cafe and Christmas at the Comfort Food Cafe and I fell completely in love with this cafe and its lively community. So when Debbie Johnson announced she was writing another full novel set in the cafe, I was over the moon. This time the story has a new cast of characters joining the regulars so if you haven't read the previous parts (why haven't you? They are amazing!), you can easily read this one as it has its own stand-alone story. 

First of all, let me say this, as I didn't think it was possible... but Coming Home to the Comfort Food Cafe is even better than its predecessors. It's a story full of heart and delivers so much more than you expect. New characters Zoe and Martha are not your conventional family and they have been in a very dark place for a few months, but when they arrive at Budbury, the locals welcome them with open arms and open hearts. 

The more we got to know Zoe and Martha, the more I liked them. They reminded me a bit of the original cast Laura and her moody teen daughter Lizzie and they actually soon became a great support for them. Their story was touching and very sad at times (I might haves shed a few tears while reading about them) but author Debbie Johnson balanced the sadness with the humour perfectly. The story was full of hilarious moments and little by little you could see these two opening up to their new community. A real joy to read. 

There's nothing I didn't like... no wait, scratch that, there's nothing I didn't love in this story. Catching up with this bunch was a treat but getting to know the new characters was even better. I hadn't read a story that had left me with such a great feeling of joy and a such a warm heart in a long while. Debbie Johnson fans, this is her best yet, you cannot miss it! And if you are not familiar with her books, then you have to rectify that. Fast. Pick this up asap!

The setting around Christmas made this story even more magical but I'd say this is a story that can be enjoyed at any time. Even better with a nice hot chocolate to go with. I cannot wait for the next installment in this series (yes, there'll be one next spring *excited face*).

Review: I hadn't realised how much I had missed Angela, Jenny and the gang until I was back with them. I was contemplating a re-reading marathon of the I Heart series before reading this one but curiosity won and I just started with this one as soon as I got my hands on it. And OMG I absolutely loved it. I'm still planning a marathon though, because I am already missing these characters immensely again.

In this new I Heart book, I laughed like never before. But I also marveled at how these characters have evolved since the first book. Take Angela for example, she still might think that running away from problems is the best solution but she now faces them (reluctantly and waiting until the last minute, but you get it, at least she doesn't move to another continent), she really has become a strong and wise(ish) woman and I admire her. She is hard-working, passionate and cares a lot about her loved ones. I have to say that she has been role model for me for many years. 

Let's not forget about La Jenny Lopez though, she gets her own spotlight in this story and she does not disappoint. So many years with Angela have mellowed her a bit, and I couldn't love her more. Every time I read about her, I wish I had my own Jenny cheerleader. Nobody can threaten disappearing husbands like her. 

Talking about disappearing husbands, rockstar Alex is not as present in this story as I would have liked... And I'll leave it here, so you can find for yourself why that is!

I Heart Forever is a real treat for I Heart fans, it's we were wishing for: laughs, tears, love, weddings, fights, mistakes, challenges and so much more. I really hope we get something more (maybe a Jenny Lopez spin-off?) but if we don't, this is the perfect ending to a fantastic series. So thank you Lindsey Kelk for all the wonderful moments!

Review: I always love books about books so I couldn't resist picking Lost for Words, I mean, it even has a bookshop on the cover! As soon as I read the first few pages though I realized that this book was something special. In fact, I would say it is a book lover's dream, with endless references to all our favorite books, charming and really interesting characters and the perfect setting, a bookshop full of rarities, surprises and secrets.

The story is narrated by Loveday, a bookworm who works in a bookshop and who definitely prefers books to people. She keeps herself to herself. The only exception is her boss Archie. He has managed, over the years, to become a closer friend. But he doesn't know everything about her, she has managed to keep her past a secret from everyone.

Thanks to flashbacks we get to know more about her story. The chapters titled History are all about her childhood and the ones titled Crime are from a few years ago. These really help us understand her better and with every new bit of information I became more and more engrossed in her story. I ended up really caring for Loveday and hers is a story I won't forget in a long time.

But Loveday is not the only amazing character in the story. As I said, her boss Archie is one of the few friends she has and what a friend. He was a people person, easily chatting to everyone, with a lively social live and a certain eccentricity that far from making him arrogant and unapproachable made him endearing and generous. He would be a friend that we would all love to have and his relationship with Loveday was a joy to read.

There were also other characters that played a big role in Loveday's story, like the magical Nathan, but I'd rather you discovered them for yourself. All I can say is that every single one of them felt real and managed to steal a bit of my heart. I am certainly gonna miss them.

All in all, I cannot recommend this story enough. It had been a while since I had felt so involved in a story like this one. It is inspiring but heat-breaking, a real gem of a book that I have no doubt will be on my top ten books of the year.

Can you believe that half of 2017 is gone already? I know we are all saying this but I had to acknowledge it. I have been very busy with work these past few months so I have read less books so far this year than last year. But I wanted to take a minute to have a look at the books I've read and see which ones have stood up. From the 44 books I've read, my top picks would be:

Lost for Words by Stephanie Butland: I have just finished reading this book and I couldn't not include it here. It really is a book lover's dream, with endless references to all our favorite books, charming and really interesting characters and the perfect setting, a bookshop full of rarities, surprises and secrets. 

The Last Piece of My Heart by Paige Toon: when I first discovered Paige Toon a few years ago, I was completely captivated by her love stories and she soon became one of my favorite authors. But in her last few books she has reached a new level, her stories are always something special, full of heart, with incredible settings and complex characters that feel absolutely real. And The Last Piece of My Heart is the perfect example of this. 

The Summer of Impossible Things by Rowan Coleman: what a well crafted and magical story this is. It left me completely in awe, as it's like nothing I had read before. Rowan Coleman makes you believe that the impossible is possible and takes you in a journey like no other.

Then. Now. Always. by Isabelle Broom: Isabelle Broom is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This is a truly special and magical story that will bring lots of sunshine to your life, with a stunning setting, really interesting characters and lots of surprises in store for them and us. 

The Escape by CL Taylor: This is C. L. Taylor's latest clever and absorbing psychological thriller. For me, she is one of the best authors in this genre and she did not disappoint at all with The Escape. It made me scared, it surprised me, it completely captured me. 

My Not So Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella: My Not So Perfect Life is such a fun, warm and entertaining read with everything I love in a story, relatable and lovable characters, a bit of love and lots of laughs. It has the same fresh and fun touch that Sophie Kinsella has us accustomed to but it also a heart-lifting and inspiring story about believing in yourself and fighting for what you deserve.

The Hate you Give by Angie Thomas: what a book, what a story, what a main character! Unbelievably good and definitely a firm contender to book of the year, if not the decade. A fantastic book with a well-thought plot and with complex and engaging characters that handles an important and current topic.

The Year of Saying Yes by Hannah Doyle: this serialized enovel was such a great surprise. It's a story that will put a smile in your face (more than once) and will inspire you to be bolder, stronger and more confident. With a really fresh and fun style, I felt like I really connected with it. 

Margot & Me by Juno Dawson: a story about coming out of age in two very different times but that reminds us about all the good and important things in life. A beautiful novel that will move many hearts.

The Song of Tomorrow by Alice Peterson: since discovering Alice Peterson a few years ago, I've fallen in love with every single book she has written. Her stories always make me cry but somehow, she always manages to make feel better about life. And A Song for Tomorrow is no different in this sense, an unforgettable heart-breaking and uplifting story. But it's also so much more. I'd might even say that A Song for Tomorrow is Alice Peterson at her best. 

By now I know that every Paige Toon book is a winner so I always look forward to her new releases with a lot of excitement. As soon as she announced The Last Piece of My Heart, I knew it was going to be a special story and I was not wrong. Here are my thoughts:

Review: When I first discovered Paige Toon a few years ago, I was completely captivated by her love stories and she soon became one of my favorite authors. But in her last few books she has reached a new level, her stories are always something special, full of heart, with incredible settings and complex characters that feel absolutely real. And The Last Piece of My Heart is the perfect example of this. 

Reading the blurb, I thought I could guess more or less what the story was going to be about but after a few pages I realized that I had had no idea, this story was really well crafted, with a lot of surprises and it captured me immediately. I felt an instant connection to Bridget (it helps that we already knew her from previous books) and I loved getting to know her. She found herself in a really difficult situation, trying to write somebody's else book, a book that thousands of readers were waiting for. Especially as she was requested to write it from the late author's place, where her family still lived. 

This experience was definitely a journey of self-discovery for Bridget. With every new day she realized that she was not living the life she really wanted to live. And soon her big relationship blog project didn't seem that important any more. And with every chapter I liked her more and more, I was really rooting for her for the whole book, especially as she showed how a strong and brave woman she was, facing her feeling and risking everything for what really mattered. 

Bridget will be a very difficult character to forget and her story will stay with me for a long time. Paige Toon has written, once again, a story like no other. It made me cry, it made me laugh, but above all, it made me care for these characters. I hope we get a glimpse of their lives in some future book.

Review: Let me start saying what a well crafted and magical story this is. It left me completely in awe, as it's like nothing I had read before. Rowan Coleman makes you believe that the impossible is possible and takes you in a journey like no other.

In the book, we follow Luna and her sister to Brooklyn after their mother's death, where they hope they will be able to understand her and her decisions better. And they are not wrong, as soon as they arrive, their connection to her intensifies, especially for Luna. For some inexplicable reason, she discovers that she is able to travel to 1977, the year that changed their mother's life forever. As you can imagine, Luna feels that she needs to change the past. But what consequences would it have in the present?

I had a great time following Luna in her adventures. She was a really easy character to love, full of heart and determination. And I loved discovering the seventies through her eyes. I could easily picture a disco obsessed Brooklyn getting ready for the release of Saturday Night Fever, the movie that would put them on the map. Luna's mother back then was also a force to be reckoned with, with a bright future in front of here. So I couldn't stop wondering, just as Luna, what had happened to her. 

This is definitely a story that I want to read again, to enjoy every little detail. Actually, I finished reading it a few weeks ago already and it's still in my head. I suspect this story will stay with me for a long time and I have no doubt it will be one of my books of the year. Seamless writing, engaging characters and an original plot make this story unmissable. So do not hesitate to get a copy this summer.

Lately I've seen this novel everywhere and everyone has been raving about it, so I was really curious to discover for myself what all the hype was about. Here are my thought about it:

Review: I'm quite sure that if you are an avid reader you have heart by now about The Hate U Give. I've certainly seen it everywhere, so to say that I had hight expectation about this one would be an understatement. Well, guess what? It totally and completely surpassed my expectations. What a book, what a story, what a main character! Unbelievably good and definitely a firm contender to book of the year, if not the decade.

I've read a review that says this is a classic in the making and I couldn't agree more. But I feel privileged to be reading it as it comes out too because it handles very current topics. It is inspired mainly by the Black Lives Matter movement and it is such an important read. I think that it should be on every school curriculum for teenagers to read because it's a book that makes you aware of a lot of things that you never really thought about before. For example, something that really got me thinking was the image we have of a police officer. As a kid, my parents would always tell me to look for a police officer if I ever got lost or needed some kind of help, but in a community like Starr's the talk kids get from their parent about the police is a very different one because there's the risk that the police might arrest you or even kill you with no apparent reason. And that's exactly what happened to Starr's best friend.

From that moment, Starr finds herself in the middle of a huge injustice but is afraid to speak up because she knows that with the current system she has already lost the battle: a young poor black guy who sold drugs probably deserved it, he was a danger for everyone. It's shocking that the reality couldn't be more different and that no one really cared. But reading about Starr, her family and her community was really inspiring. Sometimes your voice really is the greatest weapon you have.

Apart from the importance of this topic and how well this book brings awareness about it. I have to say that this is a fantastic book with a well-thought plot and with complex and engaging characters. Starr is probably the most special characters I have read about in a long time. Not only is she easy-relatable, smart and fair but she is kickass heroine that brings the best in people. And every single character in this story is as complex and interesting as her. They all have their own story that complements the main plot perfectly. It feels like every single one of them has its role, nobody is there for the sake of adding a few pages to the story or to fit a cliche. 

Starr's family is really a joy to read. They couldn't be more supporting and loving and they always tried really hard to show how much they cared. They obviously had their problems but they also added a really fun spark to the story. Because yes, this is a very serious topic but the story if full of funny moments (if you love Harry Potter, you'll find yourself actually crying with some of these moments).

All in all, The Hate U Give is a story you need to read. It has a really important message, you learn a lot from it and you have a great time reading it, what else can I say? Just go and get a copy, you won't regret it.
